Since lesions may be focal, multiple sections from each tissue sample should be examined; this is done through either *step sectioning* or serial sectioning.
Serial sectioning of biopsy specimens is superior to *step sectioning*, and the diagnostic yield increases with the number of sections examined although the number of sections to be examined in daily practice has not been optimised.

Asker: Ciao Genny, grazie dell'aiuto. Sarà sincera, non mi convinceva molto "a gradini", quindi ho cercato ulteriormente su spunto di un'amica biologa e ho trovato un articolo in cui si parlava di "sez. a intervalli" con tanto di conferma di termine inglese. "A gradini" poi ho trovato che avesse un'altra accezione (http://www.funsci.it/files/TAGLIO-SOTTILE.pdf)
