Hello

I see the topic about how to deal with social sanctions due to translation in the adult industry was locked. I can't see who locked it, nor can I see a reason for locking it (often, when a topic gets locked, the staff member who locks it posts a final message about why the topic is being locked). A thread starter can't lock their own topic, so this must have been done by ProZ.com staff.

This leads me to wonder: are there certain subject fields in which translators legally work which we are not allowed to discuss on ProZ.com's forums? Is there a list of such subjects anywhere?

By the way, Robert also posted a question about this, but his post was removed for having been posted in the wrong subforum (Translator resources).

There was nothing wrong with that post. Or if there was, I failed to see it.

Now threads seem to be disappearing in the same manner as activists protesting Amazon deforestation.

Out of respect for Proz members, it would be a common courtesy to let us know what is going on.

My question is about the locking of topics, not the outright removal of entire threads.

FWIW, I don't remember that what you're saying was ever the case. You got (and still get) a notification if a thread is removed, but only if you were the original poster, and you [often] got (and still [often] get) a notification if one or more of your individual posts were removed or hidden, along with a reason for its removal (e.g. sometimes it's because you contravened a rule, or sometimes it's because your post contained quoted text that was later removed for contravening a rule).

Self-explanatory. Dec 19, 2019

If we discuss a certain area of translation we commonly end up discussing terminology in that area because it's the essence of our job. If we do that on a public forum, it's self-explanatory why that thread was locked.

Also, the OP was unclear about what exactly their question was. If that's a category that may possibly belong on Proz site, what category would you put it in? It's certainly not literature. If it were about erotic novels, it may (possibly) be in the literature section

If it were about erotic novels, it may (possibly) be in the literature section of the forum. Otherwise, I don't see where it would be. And I especially don't see how they would market that service on Proz, what if they want to illustrate their service with a picture, just like a tech translator illustrates theirs with a picture of industrial machine?

: )

I'm not sure about that. Firstly, offensive words that are posted on KudoZ as part of terminology questions do not get hidden from the public. Secondly, if any individual posts words that ProZ.com finds objectionable, the moderator can hide the post and ask the poster to edit his post (this is what currently happens in many other cases). Surely one can put a little bit of trust in members' discretion not to posting words that are highly offensive, without having to pre-emptively shut down the thread.

The OP was unclear about what exactly their question was.

Usually, if a poster starts a thread in the wrong subforum and it does not appear to have been a malicious act, the thread is simply moved to the appropriate subforum by a moderator. Also, it is quite common for posters to be insufficiently clear in their initial posts and to clarify what they are actually asking about in subsequent posts -- none of these are sensible reasons for locking a thread.

I especially don't see how they would market that service on ProZ.com, what if they want to illustrate their service with a picture, just like a tech translator illustrates theirs with a picture of industrial machine?

My question is not about what content is allowed on profile pages. Obviously there are restrictions to posting pictures on profile pages. And there are restrictions on posting images to the forums, but I doubt if any member would be so stupid as to post pornographic images in the forum, even to "illustrate" a point.

Thread was locked from a misunderstanding, now un-locked Dec 19, 2019

Hello Samuel,

I see the topic about how to deal with social sanctions due to translation in the adult industry was locked. I can't see who locked it, nor can I see a reason for locking it (often, when a topic gets locked, the staff member who locks it posts a final message about why the topic is being locked). A thread starter can't lock their own topic, so this must have been done by ProZ.com staff.

I discovered that the thread you specify had been locked by site staff as a result of a misunderstanding. I have un-locked it now. And, yes, when a topic is locked, staff makes a final post explaining why. This was not the case, obviously, sorry about that.

This leads me to wonder: are there certain subject fields in which translators legally work which we are not allowed to discuss on ProZ.com's forums? Is there a list of such subjects anywhere?

No. There is no such list. ProZ.com forums are provided for discussions within ProZ.com's scope ( https://www.proz.com/scope ) and the thread you mention falls within such scope.

As Samuel correctly states, Fiona, notifications are still sent when a complete forum thread or an individual post is removed --to both, members and non-members alike. These notifications include the reason too. If you are not receiving them, please submit a support request so that staff can look into this, https://www.proz.com/support

Hope this explains and sorry for the inconveniences.

Lucia
