Chlorine disinfection
a) General: Chlorination will be used for disinfection of potable water in all cases with the exception of individual or small unit water purification for which iodine tablets may be used.
b) Efficiency: The efficiency of chlorine disinfection is affected by the following variables:
1) A combination of the form of chlorine present, the pH of the water, and the contact time.
As the pH of the water increases from 5 to 9, the form of the chlorine residual changes from hypochlorus acid (HOCI) (the most effective form) to hypochlorite ion (OCI -) which is less effective.
The most effective disinfection occurs when the pH is between 5.5 and 6.5.
At the same pH, a longer contact time also results in increased disinfection.
2) The type and density of organisms present (virus, bacteria, protozoa, helminth, or others) and their resistivity to chlorine
Bacteria are the most susceptible to chlorine disinfection whereas the cysts of the protozoa Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia are the most resistant.
3) The temperature of the water.
At lower temperatures microorganism kill tends to be slower, and higher chlorine residuals or longer contact times are needed.
4) The concentration of substances other than disease-producing organisms that exert a chlorine demand.
During disinfection, chlorine demand can be exerted by chemical compounds such as those containing ammonia and organic material.
Many of these compounds are not effectively removed in conventional water treatment processes and may be present to exert chlorine demand during disinfection

التعقيم باستخدام الكلور
أ) عام: في جميع الحالات سوف يتم استخدام الكلور لتعقيم مياه الشرب باستثناء وحدات تنقية الماء الصغيرة او الفردية والتي قد تستخدم اقراص اليود.
ب) الكفاءة: كفاءة التعقيم بالكلور تتأثر بالمتغيرات الاتية:
1) شكل خليط الكلور الموجود، ودرجة حموضة الماء، ووقت الاتصال.
بينما ترتفع درجة حموضة الماء من 5 الى 9، يتغير شكل رواسب الكلور من حمض الهيبوكلوروز(HOCI) (الشكل الكيمائي الأكثر فاعلية) إلى أيون الهيبولكوريت (OCI -) والذي يعد اقل فاعلية.
يحصل التعقيم الأكثر فعالية عندما تكون درجة الحموضة بين 5.5 و6.5.
وعند نفس درجة الحموضة، يؤدي وقت الاتصال الطويل إلى زيادة التعقيم.
2) نوع وكثافة الكائنات الحية الموجودة (الفيروسات، والبكتيريا، والبروتوزو "الكائنات أحادية الخلية"، والديدان والكائنات الدقيقة الأخرى) وحساسيتها للكلور.
البكتيريا هي الأكثر عرضة للتعقيم بالكلور بينما تعد اكياس الكائنات أحادية الخلية مثل الاميبيا هيستوليتكا والجارديا لامبيا أكثر مقاومة.
3) درجة حرارة الماء.
تموت الكائنات الدقيقة بشكل ابطئ عند درجة الحرارة المنخفضة، مما يتطلب كمية كلور أكبر او وقت اتصال أطول.
4) تركيز المواد الأخرى غير الكائنات الممرضة والتي تتطلب المزيد من الكلور.
أثناء التعقيم، يزيد الطلب على الكلور بواسطة المركبات الكيميائية مثل تلك المركبات المحتوية على الامونيا والمواد العضوية.
العديد من هذه المركبات لا يتم إزالتها بشكل فعلي عبر طرق معالجة الماء التقليدية وقد تتواجد وتتطلب المزيد من الكلور اثناء التعقيم.

Source text - English In your own community you might have become aware of households with food insecurity. There are two forms of food insecurity; chronic and acute.
Chronic food insecurity is commonly described as the result of overwhelming poverty indicated by a lack of assets (means of living).
The acute food insecurity is usually considered to be more of a short-term phenomenon related either to manmade or unusual natural shocks, such as drought.
While the chronically food insecure population may experience food deficits relative to need in any given year, irrespective of the impact of shocks, the acutely food insecure require short term assistance to help them cope with unusual circumstances that impact temporarily on their lives and livelihoods.
Both chronic and acute problems of food insecurity are widespread and severe in Ethiopia. Drought and conflict are the main factors that increase problems of food production, distribution and access.
High rates of population growth and poverty also play a part, within an already difficult environment of fragile ecosystems where it might be difficult to produce sufficient food.
The fact that almost 80% of the population in Ethiopia depends almost exclusively on agriculture for its consumption and income needs means that measures to address the problems of poverty and food insecurity must mainly be found within the agricultural sector.
Other natural disasters such as pest infestations destroy area-specific production levels and the threat of locust swarms is often present.

انعدام الأمن الغذائي المزمن عادة ما يوصف بأنه نتيجة للفقر المدقع والذي يعبر عنه بقلة الممتلكات (وسائل المعيشة).

مشاكل انعدام الأمن الغذائي المزمنة والحادة منتشرة وشديدة في إثيوبيا. يشكل الجفاف والصراع العاملان الرئيسان في زيادة مشاكل انتاج الغذاء، وتوزيعه والوصول إليه.
يلعب معدل النمو السكاني المرتفع والفقر دورا كذلك، ضمن المحيط الصعب للنظام البيئي الهش حيث قد يكون من الصعب إنتاج الغذاء بشكل كافي.
وحقيقة أن ما يقرب من ثمانين في المائة من سكان إثيوبيا يعتمدون بشكل حصري تقريبا على الزراعة من اجل استهلاكها وحاجات الدخل تعنى ان التدابير الرامية إلى حل مشاكل الفقر وانعدام الأمن الغذائي يجب ان تُوجدا بشكل أساسي ضمن القطاع الزراعي.
تؤدي الكوارث الطبيعية الأخرى مثل تفشي الآفات الزراعية إلى إتلاف مستويات الانتاج في منطقة معينة وغالباً ما يوجد خطر اسراب الجراد الصحراوي.
