Large dams and reservoirs may cause strains in their underlying strata. These strains may be released suddenly, inducing earthquakes, or occur slowly a as small long-term movements. Small long-term movements have been measured in the rock foundation beneath two rockfill dams in Sweden. Periodic movements in the rock foundation caused by variations of the reservoir level have been measured at Seitevare Dam. It is a regulation dam where the reservoir level varies annually within a range of maximum 43,5 m. I am a chemical engineer with a thirty years working experience in the environmental area and in the energy sector. I have a Sanitary Engineering Master Degree from the International Institute for Hydraulics and Environmental Sciences-IHE in Delft, Netherlands and, specialization in Environmental and Energy Planning from COPPE, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I worked, as environmental analyst, at the Environmental Agency of Rio de Janeiro State (FEEMA) and, the last twelve years, at FURNAS Centrais Elétricas, an energy generation/ transmission company responsible for the energy supply of more than 60% of Brazil population. Other activities included teaching and consultancy.
