Languages and literature are my passion, and that's why I've studied these subjects in university. I hold a master's degree in Literary Studies, and propedeutic diplomas (plus two more years of education) in Dutch and Italian language and literature. At the department of Literary Studies I have learned to analyse and interpret texts, a skill that is very useful in translation; to grasp the meaning of a text is essential for a good translation.
I have lived and worked in Italy, in Portugal, in the US and now I am living in the UK. These experiences have turned me into an open-minded person, sensitive to cultural differences and to the way these are expressed in language.
I have been working as a freelance translator since 2006 and I specialise in gastronomy. During my studies I have worked in restaurants in both the Netherlands and in Italy, I have worked in-house at an Italian food company, and in the past year I have translated four cooking books, of which the first two have recently been published. I have translated many recipes, ingredients, product descriptions and other food-related texts.
Other subject areas I regularly work in are tourism, manuals, sports, and fashion.
Since 2007 I also work as a writer for the Dutch company Letter on Demand. This job has helped me to develop my writing skills, and as a consequence this has improved the quality of my translations. Translation is not only about having good knowledge of foreign languages, but it also has a lot to do with mastering your own native language. I love my language, I am a good translator and writer, and I am very dedicated to my job.
