We love Bushisms! You know, those quirky, nonsensical, grammar butchering expressions that repeatedly slip out of the mouth of the US former president, usually at the most critical moments. The Bush era has come to an end, which means a lot less laughs during presidential speeches. So, in memory of my “oh so eloquent” ex-commander in chief, I have chosen a small sampling of Bushisms to include here in the Ccaps Blog.

Quem nunca sentiu um frio na espinha ao ver os jogadores brasileiros de futebol dando entrevista? Tudo bem que eles levam milhões de torcedores à loucura quando fazem gols, mas nem podem imaginar que levam zilhões de estudiosos, falantes, tradutores e estudiosos da língua inglesa à completa insanidade quando decidem falar em inglês.
O que mais dói é saber que você gastou grande parte do seu salário comprando dicionários, participando de cursos, fazendo intercâmbio para aprender inglês e nada disso aumentou um zero na sua conta corrente. E eles que simplesmente “pruve the pass” estão, cada vez mais, triplicando oS zeroS daS contaS bancáriaS e só precisam realmente saber falar uma palavra: Goal!
Pois bem, esse vídeo que vocês vão assistir é apenas uma forma de deixar os nervos à flor da pele, a barriga dando embrulhos, a espinha torcendo, as mãos suando. Maaas, não fiquemos tão aflitos! Enfim… Vamos prosseguir com o vídeo:
Depois de assistir esse vídeo, chegamos a três conclusões:
1. Cinco anos de cursinho, três anos de intercâmbio, aulas de inglês particulares com a sua prima, leitura de tradução de música no Vaga-Lume, ver filme com legenda em inglês — nada disso vai te fazer ganhar R$ 3.200.000,00 mensais. Portanto, desacostume-se com os zeros.
2. O importante na vida definitivamente não é saber ler e escrever, muito menos saber inglês. O importante é boa forma física (se você for um “fenômeno” não precisa!), ter um cabelo chamativo e feio (suuuper necessário!), saber arrotar o alfabeto, tocar algum instrumento usado em grupos de pagode, ter uma chuteira com uma cor inventada especialmente para você (como verde-musgo-fluorescente-alaranjado), saber dar estrelinha, cambalhota ou alguma pirueta de circo (para as comemorações, né?), falar sempre na primeira pessoa do plural (”fizemos um bom jogo e… demos de tudo de si e… ganhemos a partida. Valeu!”).
3. Jogador de futebol é uma profissão de pouco tempo. Ninguém é jogador de futebol a vida toda. Apesar de o salário que eles recebem valer por toda uma vida, se for bem investido. Mas jogadores de futebol não costumam ser bons investidores. Na maioria dos casos, nem bons jogadores são. Ou seja, sejamos estudantes, estudiosos, ou falantes da língua inglesa, já que vamos durar para sempre.

Who hasn’t felt a chill down their spine while listening to Brazilian soccer players being interviewed? Fine that they make millions of fans crazy with joy when they score a goal, but you have no idea how insane with embarrassment they make the zillions of scholars, speakers, translators, and English students feel when they decide to try to speak English.
What hurts even more is knowing that you’ve spent a huge chuck of your salary on dictionaries, courses and exchange programs to learn English and none of this added even one zero at the end of your checking account balance. Those that simply “pruve the pass” are, once again, tripling the zeros at the end of their account balances and they only need to know how to say one word in English: Goal!
The video you are about to watch is at least going to leave your nerves frazzled, stomach churning, spine twisting, and palms sweating. Buuuut, we are not quite so affected! Anyway… Let’s proceed with the clip:
After watching this video, we come to three conclusions:
1. Five years of English classes, three years in an exchange program, private classes with your cousin, reading translations of music at Vaga-Lume, watching movies with English subtitles – none of this is going to earn you R$3,200,000.00 per month. Therefore, don’t get used to those extra zeros.
2. In life, it is definitely not important to know how to read and write, much less know how to speak English. What is important is good physical form (if you are a “phenomenon,” even this isn’t important!), horribly flashy hair (Veeeery necessary!), know how to burp the alphabet, play an instrument used in popular samba bands, have a soccer shoe custom made with a color invented just for you (like fluorescent-moss-green-orange), be able to do cartwheels, flips or other circus tricks (for the celebrations, right?), always speak in the plural first person (”We have a good game and… we give all we can and… we win the game. Cheers!”).
3. Professional soccer player is a short lived career. Nobody plays pro soccer forever, although their salary is enough to last them a lifetime if invested properly. Yet soccer players are not known for being good investors. And in most cases, even the great players aren’t that great. In other words, let us be students, scholars and English speakers, since we shall last forever.
