Hi everyone! I'm translating a sci-fi novel and am struggling with this line. Any help appreciated! Thanks!

Respirei fundo e avancei lentamente até o quarto de pinça em punho. Dava para ver a luz vindo de lá de dentro e, conforme eu me aproximava, conseguia distinguir a forma do vulto também. Era um homem muito velho munido de uma enxada e uma cara deformada, aparentemente, por causa de um tiro. Quando apareci no umbral, ele escancarou ***seu misto de boca com vazio dos olhos para baixo***, berrando.
