I have never heard of a metal recorder, although it is possible that one has been or could be invented. Also, recorders are not typically used in marching bands. Modern metal flutes are.
So... could your client possibly be using the wrong terminology in the Portuguese source text?
Hope this points you in the right direction. Good luck.

Zero google hits for the exact words = \"flauta transversal doce\". So, it seems suspicious, i.e. either a new invention for which a new word has to be created, or the wrong source terminology.
'flauta doce' is a 'recorder' and is either made out of plastic or wood. It is held vertically. A 'flauta transversal' is a 'transverse flute' or just 'flute' and is made out metal. It is held in a horizontal position.
todd- musician here says photo on recorder site is of wooden flute, flauta doce, and the flut ein question is a metal flute. am closing question with answer as TRANSVERSE FLUTE> thanks to all.
antnio - saw that site on google, but a musician is calling it a transverse flute?
