Pela antiga lei brasileira, havia a licenciatura plena e a licenciatura curta. A primeira habilitava o professor a ensinar no ensino médio, a última no fundamental. A LDB de 96 extinguiu as duas categorias, e hoje somente existe Licenciatura.

"Elementary Education Teaching Certificate" é a designação adotada pela maioria dos estados americanos para a Licenciatura Curta. Se for a plena, é "Secondary Education Teaching Certificate".

Pensei ter dito antes que, embora o bacharelado exija maior carga de disciplinas do que a licenciatura, o bacharel não está autorizado a lecionar. A bifurcação se dá no meio do curso na faculdade, quando o aluno escolhe qual caminho vai seguir.
