neutral  Richard Purdom: A farmer has a field of pears. He can pay pickers per hour, hour work, he can pay pickers per kilo, piecework, or he can pay someone a fixed (lump) sum to pick the whole lot. That last is an 'empreitada'. It is NOT piecework

agree  Gilmar Fernandes: "on a piecework basis" - it's a possibility to hire a contractor to perform some specific portion of a construction project, so it's not entirely wrong

-> Obrigado Gilmar. Please note the asker already confirmed this is a "Lump Sum Agreement", but she needs a translation for "regime de empreitada" or "empreitada" all alone. Hence my suggestion. Abração, cruzeirense de uma figa!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Construction_contract

The six types of contracts are:

Lump sum contract
Item rate contract
Lump sum and scheduled contract
Cost plus fixed fee contract
Cost plus percentage of cost contract
Special contracts

Lump sum contract

In a lump sum contract an owner agrees to pay a contractor a specified lump sum after the completion of work without a cost breakdown.

Margarida,

Ok, now after a 2nd reading, I see that it's just a heading which calls for more of a general term. I believe you could use "The type of construction contract" and then go on to translate "preço global" as lump-sum contract. Hope this helps.

translators almost always work for piecerate, it is the rate per word. Would ANYBODY call what we do 'sobre regime de empreitada'?

disagree  Matheus Chaud: There are several types of "empreitada". Please see my reference. By the way, you did a great job clarifying what piecework means! Very good references. I just disagree with your last sentence - all the rest looks perfect.
1 hr
-> What do you disagree with in my last sentence? Getting paid per word is the very definition of piecework. Getting a fixed fee for proofreading isn't, for example. Reread the original text, empreitada por empreteiro, I think we all know what that is

agree  Mario Freitas: Thank you Matheus! As I said, there is no doubt an "empreitada" is a lump-sum agreement. However, Margarida needs a word to translate "empreitada" out of the contract context. I am positive about "piecework", as this is the term all engineers use.
6 hrs
-> Sure! After all, context matters.
disagree  Richard Purdom: In your reference, the next sentence says it all: 'In the piece work agreement only rates of items of work or supply are entered without reference to total quantity.' in other words payment per piece. See my reference. BTW I am a qualified engineer
17 hrs
-> Thank you! "**empreitada por preço unitário** - quando se contrata a execução da obra ou do serviço por preço certo de unidades determinadas" (as added above). Have a good day!!
