the rooms in a palace or castle where the lord/king used to receive his counselors, dignitaries and the like (as opposed to his private apartments)
more generally, how would you translate the word "rappresentanza" in this context (as in "palazzo di rappresentanza")?
i've found "entertainment" somewhere, although i feel it is not very appropriate in this context (i.e. some "rappresentanza" is also entertainment, but there is more to it than that).

another alternative..this type of room would be designed to meet with dignitaries, hear grievances from the general populace and also as an entertainment venue (banquets.. etc)
