Hello everybody,

I am curious to know if your translation workload has decreased like mine due to the spread of AI?
It seems that people use AI and then edit the output themselves.

AI is very common practice now Feb 7

Dear Iman,
I have noticed that some clients are only sending reviewing jobs which apparently is AI generated bilingual files.

Virtually every translation jobs are going through a touch of AI translation first. Only fine tuning and restoring fluency and maintaining style is the real and remaining responsibilities with the translators. Some lazy service providers don't even bother to do that!
So, certain clients have programmed their translation server such that one cannot even copy any text from their. Pasting text also is not possible their. Interestingly their main intention is not translation of texts, rather they are feeding randoms texts to the LLM models of AI.
AI is just unavoidable.
However I'm keen to know what my other colleagues think about that.
Regards
Sumit

I’m not sure AI is only to blame, I’d say that Covid, political instability, war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, inflation, ideological extremes are having inevitable knock-on effects on the economy and create a perfect storm…

Drastic decrease of assignments Feb 7

Hello Imam,

In January I hardly got any jobs and I don't think that the situation will change. Despite of what some colleagues say, that this is only a temporary stagnation, I think that AI has put an end to our profession. Personally, I think that we have to retrain, because AI is getting better and better.

Greedy shareholders Feb 7

In some languages, AI is certainly not good and does not seem to get better with time. However, volume of work is drastically reduced, because most assignments go through larger and larger translation companies (notice all those mergers and acquisitions in our industry) with more numerous and much greedier shareholders to please.

Many businesses don’t really need good localised content. They just need some content to please search engine algorithms. So, AI slop will do just fine for them. Why waste money on professionals who take pride in their work and pay attention to detail, nuance and other such unfashionable notions?

AI is doing more and more of the work Feb 7

I only do a very small amount of translation these days, but am spending much less time on each project because of Google Translate (specifically). I run the source text through Google, with any personal identifying information removed, then review, correct and format the text so the final product matches the source as closely as possible. Years ago, I would do all the translation myself but machine translation has become frighteningly powerful. I'm sure that a lot of full-time translators ar... See more

Bottom feeder impact Feb 8

I suspect the main culprit for the 'decrease in the workload', especially in your and my language pairs, are the bottom feeders, entering the 'profession' in their hundreds every day armed with MT.
Blaming the AI is easy. People should take notice of the new names (initials) appearing in their regular agency clients' CAT tools every other month and ask themselves why they are being contacted less and less.

As good old Paul Dixon (RIP) used to say, there should have been some sort of 'regulation' in this business, but there has never been.. now it's too effing late, anyone with a computer and internet connection can fake their way through agencies' databases and offer 'competitive rates', and the PMs will forever go to the cheaper ones.
I wish the AI was the only worry.

May he rest in peace.
I didn't know it either... it's very sad. Nobody announced it, only Proz.

It depends on the area Feb 11

Yes, I've read from a colleague, I've also noticed more proposals on editing than translating lately.

For those who want to continue working with this, it's better to specialize in areas that are not so technical, like literature.

Sudden drop Feb 11

I am experiencing a drop in translation requests that occurred all at once. AI is the main reason but our field is also affected by world's financial situation. For people who are not that young but still very far from retirement age, that's an appalling scenario

Side notes Feb 12

1. It would be interesting to see how the number of translation requests on this website has varied over time. In my language pairs I see a request once every 2-3 days. In my ProZ glory days at the beginning of this century there were dozens of questions every day.
(This, of course can be the cause, or the effect of wider use of machine translation)

2. As to being a dying breed, I see hope for those, whose target languages are not translated very well by MT/AI... But yeah, it's a matter of time nevertheless.
